Words From The Director General
Woman Movement, Remember The Beginning
The 11th director general

The women movement is an extremely distant journey.
2 or 3 decades ago, the society was very secure and not open. Moreover, in the women movement processes, it is often seen from an unique perspective. When assisting each case, the high jury is always not only biased but also inhumane in criticizing several acts, especially when the victim desires to give up. However, with the association’s fortified back line support and voices from friends, we slowly change the contaminated society culture and protest the government as well as law rules. |
For example, the 1993 Ru-Wen Den husband killing case, with law and women’s escape, became the home abuse act. In 1994, the Wan-Ru Pong killing incident sparked a parade to promote the sexual abuse act. In 1995, the gender inequality in marriage property sparked the gender equality acts. In 1996, the Philippines helper sexual abuse act allowed public reporter conferences to protect all foreign helpers working in Taiwanese houses. In 1998, the nurse rape case in a hospital by a doctor was won. Since 1987 to 2002, the gender equal working environment, couples living together situation, and the marriage property distribution all were established through diligent blood and sweat work from the various women rights organizations and friends.
Later on, the women organization promotes women’s roles in the government. Through women’s roles in the government and politics, the women’s position in the social hierarchy is raised and the nation’s resources are redistributed in a different way. Therefore, to promote such tenets, I participated in government organizations. Due to my constant experience in assisting the women movement and my witness in the single mothers or helpless women, I give out more considerate and warm solutions and principles to secure the minority’s rights. For example, the modification in the gender core amendments. I hope to help and secure every woman finding a career in Taiwan. Furthermore, to go against abuses, I provide professional training and boost the career initiation cost for minority women. Also, the standard two candles of woman, the career and the family, often caused working females to have too much pressure; therefore, I promoted another solution to have women keep their jobs and have no salary when an emergency or harsh living condition is interrupting their lives such as taking care of a new born baby. When designing in law, for both parents to play pivotal roles in raising a child, they are both given non-sharable 6 months assistance in money. This promotes not only men to participate in chores but also allow them to alternate in businesses without losing each of their jobs. Women’s participation and contribution in the government inevitably upgraded many female minorities’ situations and these effects are no doubt shown in the history.
After leaving the government, I went back to the majority’s lives. I often anticipate, as long as I have the heart to do something, I can take a step further daily towards my ultimate goal. Strengthening the women movement, promoting women’s participation to help each other and assisting the minority to solve economic conflicts, I still have a whole lot of dilemma for me to solve and complete. This is why the Taipei Awakening Association was established.
